Video Transcript for Laclede Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook Review

What's up everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today, we are gonna be checking out these safety chains from Laclede. We're going to use this to replace our old, kind of rusted up chains, that don't have a guard on them anymore. So now with that replaced, it's gonna be easy to hook them up and get set up to go whenever we need to tow our trailer. Let's check it out. The chain is going to be 35 inches long and also in the inside, it's going to be three eighths of a diameter inside the link here on the chain.

And then coming up here to the hook it's gonna be the same thing, three eighths diameter of the hook. Chain's also going to have a weight capacity of 5,400 pounds and then it's got a zinc coating here on the outside to protect the chain. Now it's not weather proof, but it is definitely gonna help you against rust and corrosion. So it's really easy to get this installed. We went ahead and removed our old one, that we're gonna replace, from the side of our trailer.

And then you just take the shackle, add the chain to it, line up those holes here on the side, drop our clevis pin through. Then at the bottom line that up, and then put our pin back in here at the bottom. And ours is a little rusty. I can push it in a little bit by my thumb there. And then I'll get the hammer just to go ahead and make sure it goes all the way through.

You don't have to hit it hard, just a couple of taps, to see more of the other pin on the other side. Then you can bend those taps out and it's good. Overall, I think it's gonna be a good replacement chain for your trailer. Especially if you got an old rusty one like this. This is gonna be a little bit of an upgrade and it gives you that guard so it's easy when you go to put that safety chain in place.

It locks in, and you're good to go, way quicker. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and I hope this helped..

Excellent customer service helping me get the right safety chains for gooseneck horse trailer

by:

Received just fine. Hooked it up to the truck hitch with some very minor filing on the Ford class v hitch where the holes were drilled. Now to give it a try pulling something. (2016 DRW Ford F-350 with Lance 975 Truck Camper)

by:

These safety chains were the perfect fit for my Kachina 25’ Mid Cabin open Bow boat trailer. I’am using these to replace the safety cables that were stock when these trailers were built.

Awesome as the day they were installed

by:

These are very strong replacements for my trailer. In fact they are much heavier duty than I needed. I purchased them primarily for the self latching hooks.

Thomas C.

Perfectly. Fit was exact and does exactly what I need.

by:

Used these as replacements on a 3600lb boat trailer. I wanted something stronger than the tiny single chain it had and upsized to these. Great chain. No rust anywhere after a year (fresh water but stored outside. Only downside is hook is thick and probably would jam into the small holes in my hitch. If you have large (bigger than 1 1/4) holes in your hitch you should be good. I welded on the 3/8 chain retainers so replacement in the future would be easier but I think these will last for years. With the retainers and the large chain and hooks I don't worry about bending the hooks if the coupler fails. Which happened on a different trailer once.
I'd definitely buy these again.

by:

Trailer hitch (adjustable height) works great and the new safety chains are high quality. Thanks guys!

by:

My safety chains were on back order but e-trailer kept me updated during the wait. Excellent customer service. These particular safety chains are perfect for my needs and best of all they are made in USA.

by:

Good looking chain. Plating seems to be done well. Links welded completely, not like some cheaper quality safety chains. Length was great for use with Gen-y torsion hitches.

by:

No complaints. I Purchased these trailer chains because they are made here in the USA. Heavy duty and after a year, they still look brand new. If you want the best, get these!

by:

Nice heavy duty chain used as a safety chain as a redundant restraint on the bow to trailer strap. Get 'em fast from etrailer.com

by:

Good hefty 3/8" chain and hook. For use on our sailboat trailer. Hooks are pretty good size, so make sure you have the room to slide them in at your receiver.

by:

Great way to improve upon an inadequate factory safety chain system on my enclosed trailer.

by:

Ready made safety chain saved me time and money from having to fabricate

by:

Heavy duty chains and super fast shipping with great tracking information and follow up

by:

Everything at Etrailer is fantastic.

Thanks
again for all your hard work!

got the wrong parts , but the company stood by its products and made everything right.
Thanks etrailer

by:

Super nice chain - Watch out for the slip hook though, as it is sturdy, but large (almost 6" long and 4" wide).

by:

Very helpful staff!

by:

Mounted these to secure mini-skid steer on trailer. Perfect for what I'm using them for.

by:

Nice safety chains!

by:

Very strong chain and hook. Perfect length as well.

by:

Good, heavy duty chain and hook.

by:

As described, chains are out in the elements 24/7 and still no corrosion or rust.
Would buy again.

by:

Very competitve Pricing, top quailty products, outstanding service & follow up. Complete USA bussiness.

You will easily be able to use the Laclede Chain Safety Chains # 1483-535-04 that you mentioned on a boat trailer. The price and quantity are for a single chain. Each USA-made chain has a 5,400 lb capacity.

The 35" Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook # 1483-535-04 has a 5,400 lb capacity. If you used two of these you would have a combined capacity of 10,800 lbs. If you made one chain out of two of these then the capacity would only be 5,400 lbs. Two of these should provide you with more than enough safety chain capacity.

  • Determining Best Safety Chain Replacement for Keystone Trailer
The length of chains you will need for your trailer will really depend on your particular setup. For example if the safety chain loops on your tow vehicle are spaced far apart, then you will want to make sure you have a bit more slack for making tight turns. Also keep in mind that you will need enough length to criss-cross them under the coupler. The easiest solution will be to simply take a quick measurement on your existing safety chains and go with a matching length for a replacement....

  • How is the Reese Titan Hitch Box Extension Supported and Does it Require Stabilization Chains
The trailer hitch on the truck is what supports the extension. The extension is designed to fit in a 2-1/2 inch receiver (measuring on the inside) and the receiver part of the extension has a 2 inch receiver opening. The only thing you need for the extension is a properly sized hitch pin like # 37201065. For lateral, back and forth movement of the extension, it is normal to see some play. Reese does not make any lateral stabilization chains for the Titan extensions. You will need to attach...

The 35" Long Safety Chain with Clevis Slip Hook, 5,400 lbs. part # 1483-535-04 I do show as being made/manufacturer in the USA which would apply to both the chain and hook. That said, it does not look like there are any origin markings on the hook.

Due to the thickness of the safety chain loops on your hitch your best option would be to go with a hook and keeper setup like the part # 1483-535-04. I attached a picture that shows the size of the opening on the hook. For just the hook you would want the part # 6495-401-04.

  • Hitch, Drawbar, Hitch Ball, and Safety Chains Needed to Tow a Trailer
For your 2001 Kia Sportage, in addition to hitch, and wiring # HM43915, you will need a ball mount and a ball for the coupler on the trailer. You will also need safety chains unless the trailer comes with them. For a 1-1/4 inch by 1-1/4 inch opening, like your Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, use Class II Drawbar, # 36051. With this ball mount, use Hitch Ball, # 19256. To secure and lock the drawbar in place, use the Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, # e98879. For safety chains, I would go with a...

The hook end of chain # 2118-605-04 will fit mount # MB12 but the opening in the chain links is too narrow for MB12 to fit. You would need chain # 1483-535-04. • Can One Long Safety Chain be Safely Cut in Half to Make 2 Safety Chains
That should work provided that in the process of shortening the chain to make 2 chains and when bending or flexing you do not stress the metal. If the metal is heated up or you see stress marks in the metal, fractures or discolored areas these are signs that the metal is fatigued and should not be used for this application. Of course the ideal solution is to just go ahead and use a new chain such as 2 of # 1483-535-04. Then you know you will have nothing to worry about. And of course,...

You can add links to your existing safety chains. My recommendation is to make sure the links you add are correctly installed, and have sufficient strength. Many of the quick links we offer may not have the weight capacity you are looking for on your 36 ft Keystone Outback Camper. • Are 1/4 Inch Grade 70 Safety Chains Sufficient For a 10,000LB Trailer?
Yes, trailers will have 2 safety chains which helps to keep the trailer centered. For 1/4" grade 70 chain the standard is for it to have a working load limit of 3,150lbs. Since the WLL is 1/3 of the break strength the chains you have are sufficient as your 10,000lb trailer does not exceed the 18,900lb break strength of the 2 separate chains.

The play that you are experiencing with the Titan Hitch Box Extension, # RP45292, is normal. This is present because of manufacturing tolerance differences between the hitch extension and receiver and the length of the extension is magnifying the play. • What is the Preferred Method of Connecting Safety Chains from a Trailer to a Trailer Hitch
Provided that you have safety chains rated as high or higher than the hitch capacity and they are securely connected to the safety chain loops on the trailer hitch, how you route them is not really an issue. You just do not want them to bind up (get wrapped around anything when making turns) as that could cause damage. So what most people do is have some sort of loop, like # C82932, connected to the trailer and then have the chains connected to it. The chains are then connected straight...

  • How to Determine Safety Chain Weight Capacity
The safety chains need to exceed the loaded weight of the trailer not the axle capacity. If the loaded weight of your trailer is significantly under 3500 lbs then a 3500 lb safety chain is fine. I have attached a link to all of the safety chains that we carry for your reference.

I went out to the warehouse and pulled safety chain quick link # 49135 to measure for you. With the nut fully opened the opening is just over 5/8 an inch (0.625 inches). If you can fit the opening over your current safety chains, they should work well as these have a 16.5k capacity each. A better solution would be to replace your current safety chains with something like the part # 49150 as this is a 44-inch safety chain kit with a 16k capacity. • How Are Safety Chains Rated
Safety chains come in a variety of classes: Class I (2,000 pounds gross trailer weight or GTW), Class II (3500 pounds GTW), Class III (5,000 pounds GTW), etc. It is important that the capacity of the chains exceed your GTW, the weight of the loaded trailer. I think the 5,400 pounds you are referring to is the chain's Working Load Limit, which is about 1/3 of a chain's break strength. Safety chain requirements state that the breaking strength of each chain should be equal to or exceed...

  • How to Choose Correct Capacity for Trailer Safety Chains
I definitely understand how safety chain capacities and determining exactly what chain rating you need for your trailer can be a bit confusing. To keep it as simple as possible, safety chain requirements state that the breaking strength of EACH chain, not the working load limit (WLL), should be equal to or exceed the gross trailer weight.A 5,000 pound trailer needs safety chains that each have a break strength of at least 5,000 pounds. A chain's working load limit comes more into play...
